This beautiful old Collins Transmitter was on the way to being part of a land fill. It was owned by Earl, W9GDV. The transmitter had been lowered into his basement, then an addition to the house was constructed above this area of the basement. The transmitter was removed from the basement just prior to the house being pushed down. KD9AW, W9OTN, K9PAW, KJ9T and Dave, a non ham hauled the 950 pound transmitter from the basement. A slight problem was encountered when we found that the floor joists above the rack were so close that it cud not be laid down. Dave went for a chain saw and the floor joists were cut out above the rack. The rack was laid down and hauled up the stairs. The rack and panels were loaded into KJ9T's pickup and transported 400 miles South to his farm in Southern Illinois. Bill, N4VMY, picked up the transmitter.
Bill got the 950 pound transmitter home, reassembled it, debugged it, and put it on the air. It generated a whopping 200 watts. His next thought was, "This looks like a KW-1, why not make it play like one?' Originally the transmitter had a single 813 in the final modulated by a pair of 805s and promised to put out a whopping 75 watts. Actually it would put out about 200 watts.
First a final amplifier was built following the KW-1 diagram as closely as possible and adding the new bands 30, 17 and 12 meters. Quite an undertaking with full band switching Pie L networks. But as you can see in the photo, Bill finally got it done.
Next came the modulator that would modulate the final. Out came the 805s and in went triode connected 813. Out with the original modulation transformer and in with a UTC CVM-5 600 watt multimatch transformer followed with a 40 henry modulation reactor.
Now as you have probably guessed, the HV power supply was inadequate so away went the original and a BC-610E transformer fit just nicely. (2500 or 2000 VDC). The 2000 volt filter caps were replaced with 3000 volt ones.
Then came the smoke test after wiring in everything. Used an Elmac AF-67 as the exciter. Flipped the transmit switch and Presto! The end result is related to u via the following pics.
AS OF MARCH 22, 2000 THE TCB-2 MADE A ROAD TRIP TO THE STATION OF KJ9T. IT WILL BE IN SERVICE AT THIS LOCATION FOREVER!!! :-)
